Thinking about ditching the stress of a traditional wedding and doing things your way? You’re not alone. More and more couples are choosing to elope, and Charlotte is one of the dreamiest places to do it. As a Charlotte elopement photographer, I’ve had the honor of documenting intimate, emotional, and downright magical elopements all across the Queen City. So if you’re wondering how to elope in Charlotte, NC this ultimate guide has everything you need.
Eloping doesn’t mean your day is any less meaningful. In fact, it often means the most important moments shine even brighter. Charlotte is full of charm, natural beauty, and hidden gems that are perfect for an intimate celebration. Whether you’re envisioning something lush and green, modern and chic, or playful and urban. This city has a vibe to match your vision.
As your Charlotte elopement photographer, I’m here to help guide you not just through the photos but through the entire planning process.
✔ Do you want to elope just the two of you or invite a small group of your favorite people?
✔ Will you include a ceremony with vows, or are you heading straight to a celebration?
✔ Want to tie the knot at the courthouse, or pick a unique Charlotte location?
Good news: There’s no wrong answer. Elopements are flexible and customizable, make it your day, your way.
Yes, but with a few important notes! If you want to get legally married at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, you’ll need to make an appointment and bring the required documentation (you can find all the current info on their official site). Photos, however, are not allowed inside the courthouse. But don’t worry, we can still document your story with beautiful portraits before and after the ceremony.
If you’d prefer to skip the courthouse altogether, you can have a private ceremony anywhere you like, just make sure your officiant is legally recognized in North Carolina.
If you’re not going the courthouse route, here are some favorite locations to consider for your Charlotte elopement:
📍 McGill Rose Garden – Romantic, lush, and tucked away in the city
📍 The Duke Mansion – Classic elegance with Southern charm
📍 Alexander Homestead – A full wedding venue that also accommodates intimate elopements
📍 Your Favorite Restaurant, Bar, or Coffee Shop – Many local spots offer private rentals for intimate weddings
📍 Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden – A stunning backdrop for nature lovers
Want to explore more hidden gems? I’ve got a list of secret spots only locals and photographers know, just ask!
There are no rules here, friends. You can wear a wedding gown, a silky jumpsuit, or that vintage two-piece you thrifted last year. Dress for the vibe you want to feel: confident, romantic, playful, luxurious, whatever feels most like you. I always recommend choosing an outfit that allows you to move comfortably and feel good in front of the camera.
Don’t forget: Heels are cute, but we’ll probably walk a bit. Bring a comfy backup pair if your elopement location requires a stroll.
Here’s a little checklist to help you prep:
✔ Marriage license (if you’re doing a legal ceremony that day)
✔ Vows (written or printed!)
✔ Any florals or bouquet you’d like
✔ A Bluetooth speaker for your favorite song
✔ Champagne or a celebratory drink
✔ Touch-up makeup
✔ A change of shoes or a jacket if the weather dips
✔ A sense of adventure, because we’re about to make some magic
Spring and fall are gorgeous in Charlotte but you can elope any time of year! Think azaleas blooming in April or golden leaves in late October. Midweek elopements are ideal as venues and locations are quieter, more flexible, and often less expensive.
As your Charlotte elopement photographer, I’ll help you time your ceremony around the best light (yes, golden hour is always a good idea).
Need help imagining what the day could look like? Here’s an example timeline for a late-afternoon elopement:

Just because you’re eloping doesn’t mean you have to skip out on the full experience. You can still hire:

✔ An officiant to lead your ceremony
✔ A hair and makeup artist to get you glowing

✔ A private jazz band to set the reception vibe
✔ A videographer if you want to relive every second
