From the moment I arrived I knew this wedding at Alexander Homestead would be something special. As a wedding photographer, the historic 1903 Queen Anne estate is a dream. It lies just minutes from Uptown Charlotte and is wrapped in lush gardens, towering oaks, and picture-perfect architecture. With that backdrop, every part of the day from getting ready to dancing late into the night, felt intentional, album-worthy and utterly joyful.
The bride began the day upstairs in the venue’s light-filled getting-ready suite, surrounded by her closest friends and family. Soft morning light poured through historic windows, and the energy buzzed with laughter, nerves, and excitement. Meanwhile, the groom patiently waited below while the bride shared a moving first look with her father on the front lawn. That moment set the tone for the day being intimate, emotional, and beautifully captured.

Later, the groom’s patience paid off. The couple chose to do a “first touch” beneath the courtyard pathway beside the barn. They were back to back, hands intertwined, but eyes hidden. They exchanged private vows in a quiet moment of connection before the ceremony began. This blind moment together felt beautifully raw, and the setting at Alexander Homestead with its charming barn and pathway flanked by garden greenery, made it even more meaningful and photogenic.

Guests gathered for the ceremony beneath the heritage oak trees and within the estate’s garden pavilion. The lush lawn, white pavilion, and Victorian architecture combined to create a romantic scene that’s uniquely Charlotte. As they said their vows, the gardens wrapped around them in green, and the venue’s timeless elegance kept the moment grounded yet extraordinary. After “I do,” we slipped away for couple portraits on the front yard lawn, with the mansion in the background. Every angle offering that hidden-gem feel of a private estate wedding right in the city.

The reception began with a first dance, heartfelt toasts, and cake-cutting beneath twinkle lights and stringed bistro lighting. Then we snuck off for more portraits, this time in the woods by the serene pond, and along the curved walkway leading back to the barn. Alexander Homestead’s diverse settings gave us effortless variety and that warm, natural light every photographer hopes for.

Finally, the dance floor came alive. The venue’s barn-style reception hall with vaulted ceilings and timber beams set the stage for a lively celebration. Guests danced, laughed, and celebrated late into the evening. At one point, the bride and groom even got hoisted up in chairs, surrounded by cheering friends. That kind of joy, within the walls and under the lights at Alexander Homestead, is exactly why I love capturing weddings. The space encourages it.

Located right in Charlotte yet feeling secluded and lush, Alexander Homestead offers the best of both worlds. The historic mansion, the botanical gardens, the pond, the lawn and pavilion: every set-up feels curated for memories. The built-in getting-ready suite, the barn with open side walls, and the garden pathways all add layers of versatility and light. As a photographer, I can say: there’s no bad spot for a photo here.
This wedding at Alexander Homestead was more than a beautiful day, it was a story unfolding in one of Charlotte’s most character-filled venues. If you’re planning a wedding in Charlotte and want historic charm, garden elegance, and a location that feels both grounded and elevated, Alexander Homestead should absolutely be on your list.
